The interpretation is based on “Sun chariot”, the Arkhangelsk region ornament with lions surrounded by birds on the upper part of the Kargopol shirt.

Anna chose this complicated pattern because it consists of multiple individual characters. After having explored several possible ideas, from working on children’s books to designing cards, Anna set before herself a goal to design a new visual system, or a set of characters based only on the original pattern, and then use these characters in the relevant context.

Initially, the pattern was decomposed into separate elements:

Then each element was sketched separately with the preservation of the general color scheme and the nature of each element outline. As a result, the key feature of pattern transformation was specifically the composition change, and thanks to this method it became possible to zoom into previously unnoticed tiny elements and present them in the form of a contemporary graphical set of characters.

As for the practical use of these characters, the choice fell on Arkhangelsk region set of stamps. Meanwhile, it is obvious that such characters can be easily used for creating a unique graphical language / gamification of projects in the Internet environment, or creating sets of stickers for messengers.

Main characteristics of the interpretation:

The nature of individual elements outline: has not been changed.

The color scheme: the overall color scheme has not been changed, however a much brighter hue of red and a bigger share (compared with the original color scheme) of secondary colors were used.

Composition and rhythmics: have been changed due to the pattern decomposition into separate elements.

Volume / relief: have not been changed, the initial pattern is one-dimentional.
