The interpretation is based on the late 18th century Gorodets style carved pattern of Nizhny Novgorod region.

The initial idea of the project was inspired by a random association. The shape of an ancient distaff board reminded Diana of an arch or a circular vault window. This random association helped Diana to formulate a paradoxical objective of the experiment, which was to develop a contemporary design of colored stained glass glazing based on a linear ornament of the past.

In the first phase, Diana decomposed the pattern into separate elements and used them to assemble a new composition:

Later, at the phase of coloring the pattern, she found an interesting solution, which drew upon the color scheme of coat of arms of Nizhny Novgorod region. That enabled her to take the liberty of coloring the original pattern while staying within the limits of well-informed and logical solutions.

The result: the authentic graphical style of bright ornament with “native” colors of the region.

Then Diana demonstrated what this pattern can look like in a summer art pavilion. In the past, patterns often served as a tool for expressing a particular attitude and view of the world. Today, the pavilion decorated with colored stained glass based on the ornaments of the past enables people to get a sense of that initial attitude, or to see the world through “the eyes of the author”. When observing surroundings from the inside of the pavilion, a visitor can see them in colors and patterns of the past.

The value of Diana’s work is that she shows us how scrupulous attention to initial pattern elements and the nature of their outline can result in a bright contemporary graphical work.
