Type of sourceArticle “Khanty Patterns: The Living Tradition”
Author(s) E. N. Vasilyeva
Description
-
Traditional patterns of the Khanty people. Each figure has a space in its centre filled with symbols. This is a so-called ‘receptacle for the soul,’ which indicates that the bear depicted is alive.
The ornaments’ shape is reminiscent of a bear’s hide. In the past, the Khanty would keep such hides and regard them as ‘spirits.’
