Description

Obverse and reverse, on the shoulder, racing chariot
Athletic events and competitions are among the most popular subjects decorating Athenian vases of the late sixth and fifth centuries B.C. The vignette on the shoulder may well have been inspired by the representations on Panathenaic prize vases. The scene here includes two goalposts; they probably mirror the columns flanking Athena on the obverse of prize vases.
