Description
-
Overlapping acanthus leaves lend an air of delicacy to this capital, carved from a block of limestone that weighs more than four hundred pounds. Its shape and lush foliage decoration had become traditional by the sixth century in the eastern Mediterranean. The bowl-shaped form and flatter vegetal patterns used on the capital on the nearby pedestal represent a different style that would become popular in Byzantium.
