Description
-
The mug is painted in a manner closely to the folk lubok. The bird is inordinately large in comparison with the other elements and its colouring is conspicuously crude. The artist has imaginatively added crown and spreading plumage. The mug bears the inscription, “In 1786 in the month of January on the 13th day this mug was painted by Nikifor Semenov, son of Gusyatnikov. Amen.” He is but one of the few 18th-century Gzhel potters whose name has not been lost in anonymity.
