This sword was presented was presented to The Metropolitan Museum of Art on June 8, 1967 by Their Majesties, King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit of Thailand. The intricate goldsmith’s work covering the hilt and scabbard date from the eighteenth century. The steel for the blade was smelted from the lateritic iron ores found at Tambon Ban Nam Ṕī, Amphur Trôn, in the province of Uttaraditth. The gift coincided with the exhibition “In the Presence of Kings,” which featured treasures given by monarchs as personal gifts.
