The wheel-shaped spokeless type of kvass pitcher was termed in local parlance the kvassnik; indeed it was used mostly to hold this beverage and keep it cold. Kvassniks possess an elegantly curved decorative tendril between spout and handle, practically always tinted green, and behind which, duplicating the curve, the figurines are disposed. As a rule, there are three of each on either side seldom, eight or ten. Some figurines represent personages of the period in which the master lived – a lady wearing a kokoshnik diadem and holding a child in her arms.
