Description
-
The pitcher impressed with the year of manufacture, i. e. 1791 attracts by virtue of its masterfully executed, painterly composition, pleasingly integrated colorouring, and typical shape. Depicted in the desing is an entire city with a life of its own, keynoted by tall towers topped by weather-vanes, and flat-roofed houses, with smoke curling up out of their chomneypots. This is more likely than not an impression of Moscow itself, which Gzhel potters often had occasion to visit.
